St. Joseph College is run by Dnyandeep Mandal, Uttar Vasai. It has been established on 25th August, 1995 with an aim of providing education to students in the vicinity, especially those who are economically challenged. Affiliated to the University of Mumbai, St Joseph College runs courses at the graduate as well as post-graduate level: both aided as well as self-financed. The campus occupies 3.5 acres and has an excellent infrastructure for students to not only complete their degree but also hone their life skills.

It gives me immense pleasure to submit the Self Study Report (SSR) of our college to the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore for Re-accreditation (Cycle II) in compliance of our LOI requirements for further quality sustenance, enhancement and improvement of the college. This exercise has provided us an opportunity to review and analyses the institutional progress after the first accreditation and further strengthened us in our quest for Quality in the times to come. The Internal Quality Assurance Cell, established after the first accreditation of our college, has been instrumental in raising the bar of excellence and adopting and implementing diverse quality enhancing measures during the Post-accreditation period. The college complied with almost all there commendations of the Peer Team in a planned and systematic manner.

This report is the outcome of the collective efforts of the entire campus community. I deeply appreciate the wide involvement and sincere, collaborative effort of the entire team. The college is striving to adopt innovative initiatives, acquiring new skills and employing new techniques.

Introduction

NAAC peer team visited our college in July 2004 .They highly appreciated our efforts towards development of our college and students .The St. Joseph College of Arts and Commerce was established on 25th August 1995 to provide education tool to economically challenged students of this region . It is run by Dnyandeep Mandal, Uttar Vasai. The trust called Dnyandeep Mandal is a parent body of college consisting of lay people which promotes educational, social and cultural thinking among the people. The Dnyandeep Mandal trust has been receiving motivation from Priests and Fathers, Brahma kumari, his Holiness bishop of Vasai diocese. There is a tradition of celebrating ST.JOSEPHS DAY in the month of March every year since inception of the college. During this particular day we organise various programmes like prayers followed by students teachers assembly, lecture by Priest and Bishops on the discipline of life and the role of teachers and students in the ever changing world. The main aim of these lectures are to inculcate among the students, the values of simple living with high thinking and always be one step ahead of all as every human being is a distinct gift of Almighty and incomparable.

The objective of the DNYANDEEP MANDAL is to provide higher educational facilities to the economically challenged students residing in rural and coastal areas of North Vasai Taluka especially which they were deprived of for years. At the initial stage this college started with two streams mainly Arts and Commerce. Since the college is located in rural area, the college could provide all the required infrastructural facilities to the students in phased manner. It is praiseworthy to note that today the college has Degree/Junior college, Self Financing streams like BBI, BMS, BAF etc. and Post Graduate master courses like M.A. (Economics), M.A. (Marathi) , M.Com. (Accountancy), M.Com.(Management).It is permanently affiliated to the University of Mumbai and recognised of UGC Act 1956 under section 2(F) and 12(B).

At the initial stage the strength of the college was hardly 80 students, but today it is 1250students and growing, where we have crossed the north Vasai border and admission is given to all the students from Vasai Taluka of Palghar district. When college started in the year 1995, only few teachers were highly qualified, but today 90% of the staff members have completed M.Phil., Ph.D., and NET/SET qualifying exams . All the appointed staff members are now highly qualified to teach at degree Junior level and PG courses run by the college trust.

The college, infrastructural facilities were completed in phased manner and constructed full of modern facilities, an auditorium, Gymkhana, Canteen and sufficient classrooms, and has IdealLibrary the full fledged number of books and journals. The college library also organises Books Exhibition every year. It has started a book bank facility for the benefit of poorstudents which has also started e-resource facility for teachers and students and research scholars.
